Quote 1

Who said it? Who is the speaker talking to? What is the significance to the play? Do you recognize any literary elements?

“I made a gift for you today…I had to sit long hours in a chair, and passed the time with sewing.”

  1. Mary Warren said this quote and she was speaking to Elizabeth Proctor. The significance is that the doll is something like a vudu doll, such as ones that witches use.

  2. Do you think that Mary intentionally gave Elizabeth a doll that would be used as evidence of witchcraft? Why or why not?

  3. Yes, i do believe that she gave it to her intentionally. In the book she stated that she was tired of being told what to do. I'd say that she gave it to her for revenge. Becasue she had also "danced" in the woods with the other girls. so it seems like she knew what was coming her way.

  4. Mary Warren said this to Elizabeth Proctor. I think that it's significant because the doll was later used in the court as evidence that Elizabeth Proctor was doing witchcraft, although she really wasn't.

  5. Mary Warren is talking to Elizabeth. The significance is the doll becomes evidence against Elizabeth because they found a needle in it and in Abigail. Literary element is foreshadowing.

  6. I would Say That Mary Attentional gave Elizabeth Proctor The Doll. Not Just Because of good will, but to pin the following event that would occur later on in the Story. And For A reminder Mary And Elizabeth Dislike each. The Reason for that was because of John Proctor :)

Marry Warren is saying this quote, she is speaking to Elizabeth Proctor, it was significant to the play because later on in the story elizabeth was accused of using voodoo, and was evidence. I think she gave t to her on purpose to set Elizabeth up.

  8. Mary Warren is saying this to Elizabeth. She was sitting with Abigail when she made it. The doll very much symbolizes a voodoo, especially in these withcraft times. Its ironic because she probably made it to set up Elizabeth so she could be hung for witchcraft.

  16. Mary Warren was speaking to John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth. The "gift" was a doll but not any ordinary doll, it was a doll that was used for witchcraft. By giving the doll to Elizabeth, she could later be accused of being a witch.

  19. Think about this... Many of you seem so convinced that Mary is an evil character who would frame Elizabeth for attempted supernatural murder, but who was sitting next to Mary in court when she made the doll? Who had the most to gain from Elizabeth's arrest?

  20. Marry Warren was saying this to Elizabeth Proctor. I believe that the doll was just a simple little thing that Mary didnt mean any harm in. Even though it was used as evidence later on in the book against Mary Warren. I think that the literary element is foreshadowing.
