Who said it? Who is the speaker talking to? What is the significance to the play? Do you recognize any literary elements?

“Is your husband a lecher?”

  1. Deputy Governor Danforth said this quote, he is speaking to Elizabeth Proctor of her husband. I believe that the term "lecher" means someone who cheats, if that is so he wanted to know if John Proctor ever cheated on her.

  2. Danforth is talking to Elizabeth Proctor. Proctor told Danforth that Elizabeth never told a lie, and John Proctor already told Danforth that he was a lecher. When they brought Elizabeth into the court room Danforth asked her if John was a lecher, and she told him no he wasn't. Now Danforth doesn't know who to believe.

  3. This quote comes from Deputy Governor Danforth asking John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth Proctor, whether or not she believes her husband is a "lecher." The dictionary definition of lecher is a promiscuous or lewd man, or in other words a husband having sex with a woman other than his wife. So when Danforth is asking Elizabeth if John is a lecher he is really asking if John has been having an affair with another partner. This is extremely significant to the play because earlier we hear John say that he never had an affair. So if Elizabeth were to say yes then Danforth would know not to believe John. But she ends up saying no, leaving Danforth confused. This quote does not use any literary elements.

  4. Governor Danforth said this to Elizabeth Proctor during court. He asked this to her because John told Danforth that the only reason Abigail accused Elizabeth was so she could be with John. John then confessed to the court that he was a lecher. It is important question because if Elizabeth says John did commit lechery it would prove that Abigail was just making the story of witchcraft up.

  18. Governor Danforth was talking to Elizabeth Proctor about John Proctor possibly being a "lecher", or cheater. The big significance to this quote is because it kinda left both the reader and Danforth questioning about who was telling the truth. After John had already told Danforth that he had been cheating on Elizabeth. Danforth basically calls her in to just hear it come out of her mouth. When she says no it kinda shock Danforth into a state of not knowing what to believe, or who to believe in that matter. I dont believe there are any literary elements.
